#98 - Who is The Saturday Fraud Strategist?

This week I did something special on my podcast. I had Hailey Windham from Fraud Forward on and we recorded a reverse interview.

Yeah, it was my turn to take the guest seat and answer some questions!

We talked about all sorts of topics: the fundamentals of fraud strategy, how to launch your consulting business, some of the lessons I’ve learned throughout the years, and more.

Hailey dished out some tough questions, and I didn’t have answers to all of them.

But she did ask me one thing about my newsletter and podcast - why Saturday?

So because Hailey asked so nicely, here’s the full story.

Why start a newsletter

Before we ask about the name or the time, we need to ask the “why” - why have a newsletter in the first place.

Around the time I started with solo-consulting I also started writing on Linkedin. There wasn’t a lot of business wisdom behind it at first. I simply had the time and the interest.

But I also learned quickly that if I plan a multi-year career in doing sales, I’d better start with marketing first.

I started reading, listening and watching a lot of content around personal branding, and one of the names that kept popping up was Justin Welsh.

Welsh made his name by teaching and mentoring solopreneurs, and to this day he has one of the best linkedin courses out there.

But I got to Welsh quite late, when my Linkedin game was on rails. So it was good to reaffirm my learnings, and I took from it a lot of tactics, it didn’t move the needle for me.

His newsletter did though.

He wrote about several topics but one of them was how important it was to start your own newsletter as a solopreneur.

So you are not dependent on social media algorithms that choose who reads you, and who doesn’t.

So you don’t write for the algorithm, but for your audience.

So you can easily collect and share these writings, if you also publish it as a blog.

And the most important thing I took from it - that I could really go deeper into topics that interested me, not needing to care about likes and views and whatnot.

And what was the name of Welsh’s newsletter?

“The Saturday Solopreneur”

The click

Every Saturday morning I would wake up and read Justin Welsh’s newsletter together with my first coffee.

It didn’t matter to me it was Saturday. It didn’t matter it wasn’t an (official) work day.

Growing as a Solopreneur was my passion, and getting these five minutes of reading in was always a good start for my weekend.

It inspired me, it gave me ideas, and because I wasn’t in meetings all day long, I could also play around with them. Or take a walk and think about it.

It wasn’t work - it was growth.

And in those first months of reading weekly, it clicked for me. This is how I want my own readers to feel like.

Or to be more accurate - these are the people I want to engage with.

Who is The Saturday Fraud Strategist?

When I’m at conferences or meeting new people, I sometimes get the “The Saturday Fraud Strategist” moniker. Like, people would actually refer to me that way.

But here’s the thing:

I’m not The Saturday Fraud Strategist.

You are.

You are reading it on Saturday.

You are taking the time to invest in your growth.

You are spending those precious brain cells away from your phone to contemplate new ideas.

And I want to thank you for it. This community has changed my life.

See you in Vegas!

Just before we finish for this week: Hailey and I are heading to Vegas for Money20/20 together with the Sardine crew (that’s Oct. 18-21).

We are planning to shoot some live mini podcasts from the floor and we both have a couple of open slots left.

So if you’re there and you want to appear on the podcast - just reply to this email.

And of course, you’re always welcome to just stop by the booth and say hi.

In the meantime, that’s all for this week.

See you next Saturday.
